Houseplants - Bringing The Beauty Of Outdoors Inside By Brooke You can bring the outdoors inside very easily with the addition of plants to your home. Most people don't have the time to care for delicate plants so they choose plants that look good with the minimal amount of looking after. These plants are usually in the families of foliage, flowering, aquatic and cacti. Foliage plants have their attractiveness primarily in their leaves and stay green all year.
Flowering plants are enjoyed for their flower displays, which usually only happen at certain times of the year. Cacti are unusual looking plants, not particularly pretty to the eye unless you have a taking for their design, but they are appreciated for their low maintenance needs. Aquatic plants are water plants, often used to complete the aquarium environment.
The light needs of the houseplant are your first consideration. Some plants require a lot of natural light and will not flourish in shady or dark areas of the house. Similarly, if your home is fortunate to catch the sun, then you need to choose a houseplant that will not wilt or go brown in the sunlight. Perhaps you like the look of a particular sun-loving plant but don't have the necessary light. You can consider installing infrared lights to create the light wavelengths that the plant needs for nutrition. It is simpler though to buy houseplants that match the environment!
Are you looking for greenery all year round? Then you need to find foliage houseplants. And don't think this will look boring. Group the foliage plants together, choosing different shades of leaves of varying shapes and sizes. You can create an attractive display without flowers. If you prefer flowering plants, you will need to consider fertilizing at certain times of the year to encourage the flowers. It is best to read up on your particular plants needs to ensure a beautiful display. If you over fertilize, you may just end up with a large, green plant and no flowers!
The
size of your houseplants really depends on your preferences, as well as the size of the area you are displaying them in. A group of plants can look as good as one large, spectacular plant but they do need to be positioned aesthetically, with larger ones at the back. Ensure that your houseplants on display do not get in the way. It is very difficult to have a decent conversation while peering through the leaves of a plant! And long, drooping leaves in a walk-way can be irritating. Your houseplants should enhance your decor, not take over!
While we all know that plants need watering, there is a way to ensure that the plant is receiving a sufficient amount. The roots of a plant are in the lower two thirds of the pot. Just pouring water on the top may not reach these roots. Filling up the pot with water will wash away all unnecessary salts from the soil and insure the roots have had an adequate amount. Garden shops sell different water measuring instruments that will help you keep an eye on your plants watering needs.
Garden shops also sell many other materials to help you nurture your houseplants. Fertilizers come in many different forms including pellets, liquid, and powder. Check that the fertilizer is suitable for your plants. If using pellets, keep away from pets which can die from eating them. For aesthetics, keep your foliage houseplants with shiny leaves looking fresh by periodically dusting and washing them with a damp cloth. There are even solutions for giving them real shine at garden shops if you want them looking their best.
Summary:
Whatever houseplants you choose, with proper care and nurture you can bring the outdoors inside. However, you need to choose carefully to match the plant's needs with the house environment.
